urban nomadism

Global Cities, urban and mobile society, cultural transnationality are popular catchwords, which are often cited subjects in multiple contemporary research and art projects. Surprisingly, there is still real potential for new and exciting works in the intermediate field between mobility, globalization, cultural and urban studies.

Many researchers drift off into this trend, either fascinated by the multiplicity of discourses or increasingly by a self-chosen way of life, a modern urban nomadism.

Once the decision has been made to live in a foreign city for a certain period of time, most will continue searching for places to spend another episode of their life in. The fascination of the unknown traps you, life abroad becomes an addiction, where urban space is seen and consumed as a resource

publication

This intended publication discusses one kind of Neo-Nomadism, represented by a creative class. Beyond dispute this creative mobile society is a privileged minority within a global motion. This fact is to be accepted. But one can argue that a nomadic lifestyle supports critical artistic productions on globalisation-based mechanisms and that art can convey this to an audience. Thus a cultural identity created by media should be discussed, so that prejudices and discrimination may be gotten rid of.

This work focuses on the influence of continuously shifting urban spaces, structures and flows on the creative working process. Everyday life in different cities, as well as an analysis of urban space, city exploration and its methods, such as mapping, should be broached. Cities are understood as heterogeneous structures and should be used and fully explored as laboratories and playgrounds.

The publication is open for the presentation of contextual and site-specific interventions in public space generated by a nomadic way of life as well as works dealing with mobility only.

This collection should represent a snapshot of this artistic practice at the beginning of the 21st century

urban nomadism > learning by living/moving

an artistic practise

everyday life

Living certain periods of one’s life in a diversity of cities and cultures, and going beyond being a tourist by continuously shifting your centre of life sharpens your view. You become sensitized to the banal and everyday situations and challenges.

addiction

Staying too long in one place causes stagnation and as a result leads to withdrawal symptoms such as “Itchy Feet” or home sickness. The modern global nomad is permanently searching for new “pastures” - new cities, which he/she can graze.

city-analysis - city-action

structures, regulations, flows, rhythms (public transportation, traffic, garbage disposal, sound -volume, informal settlements, abandoned places, public space etc.)

not just about mobile architecture

Adaptability and architecture should not only be discussed in the field of Mobile Architecture. Rather, there should be a focus on nesting in culture-specific structures and the production of experienced spaces.

my home is my computer > compression of space

A home is not a house anymore. What defines “home”? Photo albums, books, CDs, DVDs, TV set, Hi-Fi system, documents, letters and much more filled the shelves and cupboards of our houses. They were part of the construction which we once defined as home. Nowadays we carry around a big part of this home compressed in only one device.

belongings

Our relationship to belongings is reconsidered. To live one year just out of one’s suitcase/backpack is not a challenge anymore. You do not even miss the things which you left behind. Questioning the meaning of assets often results in the disassociation from things and furthermore from a sedentary lifestyle.
